Jerusalem Archaeologists Confirm Story of King Solomon - March 12, 2010

Jerusalem Archaeologists Confirm Story of King Solomon - March 12, 2010

Israeli archaeologists have made another staggering discovery that supports Biblical teaching and history.  They have discovered a part of a wall that was likely built by King Solomon in the 10th century BC.

Hebrew University in Jerusalem confirmed that after three months of excavations, a six metre high and 70 metre long wall has been discovered.  Archaeologist Dr. Eilat Mazar stated “We can estimate, with a high degree of certainty that this was built by King Solomon toward the end of the 10th century BC.”

The Bible teaches that Solomon built the first Temple in Jerusalem and that the Temple was destroyed by King Nebuchadnezzar in 586 B.C.  The statement from the Hebrew University says that this discovery “could corroborate written descriptions which recount construction projects carried out by King Solomon in Jerusalem.” Other structures from the time period were also discovered including a gatehouse and a tower overlooking the Mount of Olives and the Kidron Valley.

Archaeologists often confirm a time period by using pottery shards found nearby a structure.  Many such shards were discovered near the wall, along with two earthenware jars.  The words “for the king” were written on the handle on one of the jars.  Digs have previously taken place at the site in the 1860’s and again in the 1980’s but neither were of the size and scope of the most recent.

What makes the discovery so important is that it refutes the claims of two groups.  Palestinians have argued that the Jewish claims to the region are modern and that the Jews have no history of permanent settlement in Jerusalem.  As well, some Israeli archaeologists have claimed that the kingdoms of David and Solomon were just insignificant tribal groups and not the regional empire that is described in the Bible. Anti-Zionists and Arabs believe that if they can destroy the idea of King David’s existence as an historical figure, they will delegitimize the modern state of Israel.

Dr. Mazar understands the implications of the discovery for modern Israel. She says this: “It's the first time that we have a city gate and fortification line from the time of King Solomon. This is a 10th century, most beautifully preserved section of the city wall and all the findings that we have in hand indicates about the 10th century that sits so well with the biblical version."
