Canadian Athlete Discovers Running Attire Missing - Wednesday, May 19, 2010

Canadian  hurdler and Olympic medallist Priscilla Lopes-Schliep recently traveled to Doha, Qatar, to compete in the Diamond League. Her luggage didn’t arrive with her.  When it finally did show up, the Whitby Ontario native was surprised to find some items missing and even more surprised to find something added to her suitcase.

A thief had taken her new shoes and running bag.  She texted her manager Kris Mychasiw “my shoes are not in my bag” and then “there’s no running clothes.”  Finally, she texted “You’ve got to see this. There’s a Bible in the suitcase – and it’s not mine.”

“The whole kicker was they put in a Bible in place of the stuff they took,” said Lopes-Schliep, now back home for a few days before another series of meets. “Someone needed to make money off the clothes, I guess, and they were asking for forgiveness.”

Lopes-Schliep said it was the Rainbow Study Bible and it had been bookmarked to a specific passage. “It was right by the part where it says ‘Paul encourages forgiveness of an offender.”  That would be 2 Corinthians 2:5-8: “If anyone has caused grief, he has not so much grieved me as he has grieved all of you, to some extent--not to put it too severely. The punishment inflicted on him by the majority is sufficient for him. Now instead, you ought to forgive and comfort him, so that he will not be overwhelmed by excessive sorrow. I urge you, therefore, to reaffirm your love for him.”

At first she thought her husband might have put the Bible in her suitcase but that wasn’t so.  The thief stole about $1000 worth of Nike gear and two bottles of perfume she had bought for her mom.

When asked what she was going to do with the Bible, Lopes-Schiep said “I’m going to keep it.  I’ll read it.”
