Kyrgyzstan Christians Offer Aid To Refugees - June 22, 2010

Kyrgyzstan Christians Offer Aid To Refugees - June 22, 2010

The latest reports from Kyrgyzstan are that the situation there remains very complex.  We reported last Thursday that since the revolution of April 7, 2010, the Asian nation is facing social and military upheaval.  The situation in the south of the country at that time was “totally out of control” according to one source.

As of Monday, things remain tense. Supporters of the former government are attempting to spread the war throughout the country by instigating local conflicts between ethnic groups.  One source stated yesterday “there were plans for arsons, massacres and killings during the nights of June 20-22 in the Talass and Tshoo regions. But for now everything is still quiet.”

In the South the situation is “catastrophic”. Hundreds of thousands of people of Uzbek background have gathered in refugee camps at the boarders with Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan. But the boarders are closed and the refugees are not being allowed to enter these neighboring countries.

People are gathered under open skies in the heat without food, water and basic needs for life.

Humanitarian aid is not getting there because it is being blocked in Osh and Jalalabad. The situation in the villages is made worse by the assaults of bandits. There is no water, electricity, gas, groceries and lootings continue.

The national Christians are responding as best they can. Using the sacrificial contributions of primarily local churches some 10 tons of groceries has been purchased and the first shipment sent last Friday, June 18th to the church in Jalalabad.  In the words of one Christian leader, “right away brothers and sisters started to distribute this help first among believers and then also they began to visit Uzbek villages.  But this puts their lives in grave dangers (both the deliveries from Bishkek to the South as well as the distributions in villages).  Please pray for this.”

On June 21 a second load was sent for the church in Osh and their surrounding villages. The local Christians want to continue this ministry of humanitarian help but they don’t have sufficient funds.  In the words of the Christian leader there “we pray and trust the Lord will help.”

They have also requested that western Christians join them in specifically praying for the situation in Kyrgyzstan:

-          for the war and bloodshed to stop.

-          for protection of churches and some specific brothers and sisters, especially as they visit Uzbek villages.

-          for distribution of humanitarian shipments.

-          for people in these horrible circumstances to turn to the Lord.

In the words of the Christian leader “We are in great need of your prayers.
