Burma Persecution Alert

Jun 11, 2009

Burma Persecution Alert

Disturbing reports are coming from our frontline ministry partners indicating that Karen Villagers are viciously being attacked.

"On June 2, 2009, the Burmese Army started a military offensive against the Karen people who seek peace and freedom. Most of these Karen people are Christians.

In one of the villages it seems no civilians were killed. This is a miracle. But one soldier who accepted Christ just three months ago was killed. Two others were captured by the Burmese Army. That probably means they will be killed unless the Lord intervenes. PLEASE PRAY! The Burmese stole all the food and supplies we had brought, but thank God they did not burn down the buildings. Hopefully one day soon there will be peace and the children can go back to their school and church.

In another camp with over 100 children at the school, every one got out after the bombs started falling in their village. They are all safe in Thailand, though they are all sick from the rain and the cold in the mountains. As of June 6, when we were there, it was reported that all of the Karen Christian solders in this village were still fine. This is a miracle that not even one person was lost. We had preached the gospel and delivered Bibles to both of these camps. In this area there is a river that separates Thailand and Burma. We were in Thailand just across the river from this camp when we heard the explosions of war.

In another area the reports are that over 3,000 people have escaped the fighting in Burma. One unconfirmed report said that 200 men had been shot in the face and killed for not joining the Burmese Army. In the area near where we were, on the Thailand side, witnesses said they had seen people in Thailand with freshly missing limbs." An internet news source (VOA News.com) confirms the attacks stating: "Thailand has confirmed reports that thousands of ethnic Karen villagers have fled into the country to escape fighting in neighbouring Burma."

Our partners go on to report that, "The Shan people are also being attacked. There are very few Christians among them, and in recent months we have begun to do some outreaches with the Shan people. Girls are being gang raped, and boys who won’t join the Burmese army have both hands cut off. The stories coming out of Burma are truly horrific."

Our ministry partners in Burma bring hope and light to a people who have little earthly reason to have any hope. Working alongside several organizations that see to the physical needs of a displaced population of over 1,000,000 in Burma, our partners bring God’s Word to people hungry for the hope and peace they receive when they become followers of Jesus Christ.

Please pray

• That God will relieve the people from their trauma.

• That God will make a way for the people to resettle in Thailand. (Thailand sometimes sends the people back to the war zones).

• God will grant wisdom to know how to help.

• The enemy would be put to shame (Psalm 86:17)

• That our partners may continue the primary focus of their ministry which is bringing Bibles and support to the Persecuted Church in Burma.
